Civilian pilot Kenneth Arnold reported the first widely-covered incident of a UFO sighting in the U.S., just a few months before the famous Roswell event of 1947. A reporter coined the term ‘flying saucers’ from a quote by Arnold. The term UFO did not enter the public lexicon until circa 1951-52.
